Street Sweeper Insurance

A road sweeper works at walking pace, often at night, in a live traffic lane with its brooms down.

We arrange street sweeper insurance that covers the truck, the sweeping gear and the liability that comes with working in traffic.

Cover shaped around council and contract sweeping work, not a generic motor template.

Cover for the Truck That Works in the Traffic Lane

A sweeper earns while it is crawling along a kerb, which is the opposite of how a standard road policy assumes a truck behaves. Most of its working hours are under fifteen kilometres an hour with other traffic passing at speed.

The machine on the back is where the value sits. Gutter brooms, the main broom, the suction fan and the debris hopper are all working parts that wear and fail, and none of them are covered by describing the vehicle as a rigid truck.

What goes into the hopper is a risk of its own. Kerbside debris is not just leaves: it is glass, bricks, steel offcuts and whatever else ended up on the road.

We structure cover for the whole unit, so a damaged fan or a split hopper is a repair rather than an argument.

Street Sweeper Insurance is one of the vehicles we cover under our Commercial Vehicle Insurance.

What Street Sweeper Insurance Typically Covers

Cover is tailored to how you run, and a street sweeper policy generally includes the following.

  • Accidental damage, collision and rollover to the truck
  • Damage to the gutter brooms, main broom and broom drive gear
  • Damage to the suction fan, ducting and debris hopper
  • Damage to the water tank, pump and dust suppression system
  • Fire, theft and attempted theft of the vehicle
  • Third-party property damage, including parked vehicles, kerbs and street furniture
  • Towing, recovery and salvage after an incident
  • Replacement vehicle or downtime options while repairs are arranged
  • Cover while sweeping, tipping the hopper and working under traffic control

Cover varies by insurer and how you operate. We confirm exactly what is and isn’t included before you rely on it.

The Risks a Street Sweeper Faces

Sweeping puts a slow, wide machine in the middle of traffic that is not slowing down.

01

Working in a Live Traffic Lane

A sweeper moves at a fraction of the traffic around it, usually at night or before dawn. Being struck from behind is the claim contractors fear most, and it is rarely a small one.

02

Debris Damage to the Sweeping Gear

Bricks, steel offcuts and broken glass go through the suction path along with the leaves. One heavy piece can take out a fan or split a hopper.

03

Broom and Hydraulic Wear

Gutter brooms grind against concrete every shift and the hydraulics driving them run continuously. Failures happen mid-shift, and a sweeper that cannot sweep is not earning.

Street Sweeper Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the machine. A truck mounted road sweeper is registered and insured as a motor vehicle, while a compact or ride-on sweeper that never leaves a site is usually scheduled under plant and equipment. If you run both, we make sure neither one falls between the two policies.

It has to be listed to be covered properly. The brooms, fan, hopper and water system are where most of the value and most of the claims sit, so we describe them in the policy rather than letting them disappear into a single vehicle figure.

Night work is normal in this trade and insurers expect it, but they want to be told. We give them the hours you work and the traffic management you use, because a policy priced on daytime work is the kind that gets argued about at claim time.

That is accidental damage to the machine, and it is one of the most common sweeper claims. We check the policy responds to damage caused by what the machine picks up, not only to damage caused by a collision.

Yes. Council contracts usually set their own insurance requirements, including liability limits and a certificate of currency. Send us the requirements and we will make sure the cover meets them before you sign.

Yes. Motor fleet insurance covers several vehicles under one renewal with a shared claims history, which usually reads better to an insurer than separate policies for each machine.
